Jacques Adnet

(1900-1984) French Interior Designer and Architect

Adnet was born in Châtillon-Coligny in France’s Loire Valley. After graduating from the prestigious École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratif he opened his design firm JJ Adnet, along with his twin brother, Jean. Adnet was later appointed the design director of Compagnie des Arts Français, and in 1970 he was named the director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Decoratifs. His name and reputation reached its height from the 1940’s to the 1970’s.

Adnet’s design aesthetic referenced classical and traditional forms reinterpreted in a modernist art deco motif. Most of his designs are characterized by clean lines and functional forms. By the 1950’s his work evolved, reflecting mid-century influences, though he continued to employ familiar leather, metal and glass elements found in his practice throughout his lifetime.
