Jean Prouve
(1901-1984) French Architect and Designer
Jean Prouve was born into a creative and artistic family in Nancy, France in 1901. He studied fine arts in Nancy before apprenticing with a blacksmith. Throughout the middle years of the 20th century, Prouve opened a series of workshops and studios, while teaching himself the principles of architecture. He is known for the design and production of pre-fab metal buildings and wood furniture, while maintaining design integrity. He won a number of commissions for high profile public projects, one of which was the design of furniture for Résidence Jean Zay at Antony, housing for university students (though not affiliated with a specific university) in the Paris outskirts. The pieces in the STOCK collection are attributed to his studio for the Résidence Jean Zay from 1955.
